Introduction:
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Government has launched two major solarization projects in KPK to help reduce the energy crisis and lessen the province’s reliance on the national grid.
With an investment of PKR 55 billion, these projects aim to switch government buildings and low-income households to solar power.
This shift is expected to bring economic savings and environmental benefits to the region.
Project 1: Solarization of Government Buildings
In the first project, KP aims to set up solar power systems in about 13,000 government buildings, including hospitals, schools, universities, police stations, jails, water wells, and offices.
This project is expected to cost PKR 20 billion, with PKR 15 billion allocated for the first phase.
- Goal: Switch government buildings to renewable energy to cut down on electricity costs.
- Benefits: This project will save electricity costs and will provide greater energy independence.
At the agreement signing ceremony, Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur highlighted that this project shows the government’s commitment to clean energy.
He added that switching public buildings to solar power will bring lasting financial savings and help create a greener Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Project 2: Solar Systems for Deserving Households
The second project aims to help 130,000 low-income families by installing solar power systems in their homes.
With a budget of PKR 35 billion, this project will ease the burden of electricity costs for struggling families, especially those living in areas with frequent power outages.
- Distribution Plan: There are two phases of this plan;
- 100,000 households in settled districts.
- 30,000 households in merged districts.
- Free Systems: 65,000 households will receive solar systems completely free of charge.
- Discounted Systems: Another 65,000 households will receive systems at a 50% subsidy.
This project prioritizes areas most affected by electricity shortages, ensuring equitable access to energy.

Key Objectives and Benefits:
These solarization projects are designed to achieve the following:
- Lower Electricity Costs: Significant savings for public buildings and families struggling with high utility bills.
- Environmental Impact: Will reduce dependency on non-renewable energy sources foster improved air quality and contributes to the fight against climate change.
- Ease on National Grid: Switching to solar power will reduce the pressure on the national power grid, benefiting the entire country.
- Energy Relief: Prioritizing areas with frequent power outages will provide crucial support to the community.
Ali Amin Khan Gandapur highlighted that these efforts show the government’s strong commitment to green energy and sustainable development.
He referred to this year’s provincial budget as a “Green Budget,” emphasizing the focus on investing in renewable energy.
Driving Innovation in Renewable Energy:
The solarization projects in KPk are a big success for its people and can inspire other provinces in Pakistan.
By using solar energy, the government of KPK is solving important energy problems and improving people’s lives.
