Introduction:
Peshawar is the capital of KPK and has a total population of 2.4 million as of 2024. Before BRT started the capital was facing several issues including traffic congestion due to an increasing number of vehicles, residents relying on expensive and less reliable transport options, and increasing pollution and fuel consumption.
All these issues were the reason for initiating an eco-friendly, affordable, and reliable transport to overcome these problems, which gave the result of the BRT system working under TransPeshawar (established and registered with the Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan in February 2017)
Inauguration of BRT:
The BRT also known as ZU Peshawar, was finally inaugurated on August 13, 2020, after long awaited by the people.
The opening ceremony was hosted by the CM Mr. Parvez Khattak. It was a joint project of the Government of KPK and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
It has a capacity of 250,000 daily passengers.
Received Awards:
The BRT system is 1st in the subcontinent, 3rd in Asia, and 11th globally to receive a gold standard service award from the ADB Technical Committee. For providing passenger-oriented, environment-friendly facilities.
Also received the certificate of International Sustainable Award from the International Transport Organization, and the UN Women has also been honored for providing the best and safest traveling facility to women.

Roots and Map:
The BRT Peshawar system covers a vast network of routes, connecting key areas like Karkhano Market, Saddar, Hayatabad, and Peshawar University. The main route spans approximately 27 kilometers, with additional feeder routes to extend coverage.

Operational Plan:
Buses for the Zu service run from 6 AM to 10 PM, every day for around 16 hours, according to TransPeshawar. This timetable guarantees Peshawar’s citizens easy access to transportation all day long.

Zu Peshawar Ticketing and Fare System:
Passengers can purchase a Zu Card from ticket offices or vending machines at Zu stations for PKR 150. No mandatory registration is required to purchase the card.
The Zu Mobile App is available for free on the Google Play Store and App Store. Passengers must complete the registration process to activate the app for use on Zu buses and bicycles.

New Fare Announcement:
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA) has recently revised the fares for the express routes of the Zu Peshawar BRT system. The purpose of this fare revision is to encourage short-distance travelers to select the proper routes, thus improving convenience for long-distance travelers. This change is part of an effort to optimize the overall efficiency of the BRT system and ensure that passengers use the most suitable services based on their travel distances, improving flow and reducing congestion on express routes.
